Shirley Nelson Maines has served for over nine years as the National Auxiliary President of the U. S. Mormon Battalion, Inc. She and her husband Gaylen Maines operate battalionwomen.com. The goal of that website is:

To research, authenticate, and preserve the history of the men of the Mormon Battalion, their wives, children, and family members who, during the Mexican War, made the long march with them. Their stories are available in the book Families with the Mormon Battalion March of 1846-48. We also honor the wives of the men who remained behind while their husbands served in the Mexican War of 1846-48. The stories of those left behind are available in the book Five Hundred Wagons Stood Still.[1]

With Carl V. Larson she wrote Women of the Mormon Battalion.
